Zombies

I use zombies as a mythical event, but it could be anything from terrorist attack, pandemic, war, or natural disaster. The techniques that I will present will all be tested by me, and explained in an easy to understand format. I will use the term zombies or zombie attack as a generic term to refer to any disaster that has the potential to take out local infrastructure and force the populace that remains to rely on themselves and not grocery stores, water and power companies, and specifically not on the government to hand out the things they need.

Much of what will be in the zombie section of this blog will be suitable for science experiments. Science is more fun when you add zombies! This will include physics, chemistry, alternative energy, biology and possibly other disciplines!

The wonders of lawsuits

by on Apr.18, 2010, under Zombies

I recently became aware of a situation where all chapter members to a Zombie Squad chapter are liable for the actions of the group as well as anything they say or do.  This liability is a personal liability and it is all members not just the ones that actually run the chapters.  At least this is the case with the California chapter, which is the only one I really investigated. Eating in the PAW without eating a paw

by on Apr.15, 2010, under Zombies

Some people like to know where their next meal comes from.  Unless you are a criminal organization, you may enjoy hearing about Thrive brand foods.  Costco has a deal 1 year of food for 1 person for $800, this includes shipping, which makes it $2.20/day.  The downside is that it is 1300 or so calories per day.  This is fine if you are sitting in a bunker, but it is not fine if you are training for release from the bunker or if you are working daily to try to get additional resources.  Just chopping firewood can consume enough calories that 1300 makes you feel really hungry.

You can supplement your diet with fiber, each 14g additional fiber means that you can feel just as full on 10% fewer calories.  A person who feels full on 2000 calories would need 50g fiber per day additional to go from 2000 calories to 1300 calories, and that is additional to the amount of fiber they ate at 2000 calories (usually 24g). Nuclear response?

by on Apr.14, 2010, under Zombies

Today it was announced by the White House that if you are cauht in a nuclear explosion you should expect to wait 24-72 hours before they do anything.  You read that right, no significant federal response to a nuclear attack would be given for 1-3 days.  This is yet another reason to prepare.

The fear is that terorrists are likely to use nuclear bombs.  Al Queda, according to Obama, has been trying to get a weapon for a long time, he added that they would be likely to use it if they got it.  Crimnial organizations all over seek to line their pockets with money.  Some have sought the components to make a nuclear bomb, there have been 18 documented cases of theft or loss of the two key components to a nuclear weapon.

In part preparing for a nuclear disaster is about knowledge.  The 7/10 rule, having medication, a place that is sheltered.  In part it is about stocking up on clean food and water.  After a nuclear detonation (or dirty bomb) the fallout contaminates open wells, lakes, ponds, etc as well as the top 18 inches of top soil.  If you were relying on these for food you may become disappointed to learn that consuming them can kill you. Why prepare?

by on Apr.14, 2010, under Zombies

I have often had discussions over the last few years on whether or not people should prepare.  There is one school of thought that the government will take care of them.  This is usually under the assumption that any disaster will be either so minor that there will be no outage of services or it will be so bad it wont matter.

Super major disasters could lead towards a mad max world, where the government would not be able to protect you and criminal enterprises would take over.  These types of disasters are also the hardest to prepare for, and generally the least likely to occur.  There are some more realistic ones that are much easier to prepare for.

In Barcelona a few years ago the truckers went on strike.  No food went into the city and after a could days there was no food.  Something about ‘just in time‘ delivery models.  More recently there are earthquakes that are making the media rounds.  A few years ago you had Katrina.  Kyrgyzstan is having a revolution, I also imagine going grocery shopping in Greece is not as fun as it once was.  None of these were so bad that a developed country would have been taken out, however there are the words of FEMA Director Craig Fugate just 2 weeks ago that come to mind.

“For everyone who could have and should have and didn’t, you’re getting in line ahead of that child, you’re getting in line ahead of that grandmother,”

If you are still undecided, perhaps this will help.  A simple “should I prepare” decision matrix.  You can see the benefits and risks associated with preparing or not preparing. (continue reading…)

Bullet proof t-shirt

by on Apr.12, 2010, under Zombies

A news article popped up today that has some application in a personal defense arena.  If you are a criminal organization then you probably should not be looking into this.  The item of course is the bullet proof t-shirt.

From the article

Here’s how it works:  By dipping pieces of cotton from a T-shirt into a solution of boron powder, the researchers created a network of nanowires made out of boron carbide – the third hardest material known to man at room temperature.

The claim is that it is less expensive than traditional body armor, and according to the lead researcher it could bring armor to the masses.  They also claim that the technique could be used to make light weight (read fuel efficient) and inexpensive vehicle bodies such as automobiles and airplanes.  If it has the strength, why not.  (continue reading…)

Fine dining in a post apocalyptic world!

by on Apr.12, 2010, under Zombies

In my continuing effort to locate tasty treats that have a long shelf life and can be prepared after the zombies attack.  I am now trying out Vigo’s paella valenciana, it is not recommended for criminal enterprises though.  The box has an expiration date of about 18-24 months in the future.  It wont keep forever but it will be something that you can stock up on and rotate them into your regular meals always pushing the date further back.

The box contains a bag of rice with seasoning already added and a can of vegetables and seafood.  There is an allergy warning that it contains shellfish, which is good because paella valenciana kinda requires shellfish :)

According to the cooking instructions you will need 3 cups of water, a shallow saucepan with a lid and enough heat to boil the water for 1 minute and simmer the rest of the time.  This means that it is not that difficult to make while camping or if the zombies do attack.  Cooking time is about 30 minutes with 25 of those minutes sitting there doing nothing, so it is not a chore to make.

Its bacon!

by on Apr.11, 2010, under Zombies

In a post apocalyptic world, assuming that you are not part of a criminal enterprise, you might want to have some bacon.  If you do not have any piggies or if all the piggies in your area were previously eaten or otherwise died or became contaminated, you might be relieved that you bought some canned bacon.  Yes, I am talking about Tactical Bacon manufacturered by CMMG.

This is 9 ounces of already cooked bacon.  Just heat and serve, and if you do not have any heat, you can eat it cold.  The pre-cooked weight is 3 pounds of bacon, and if you compare the price of this bacon to raw bacon at the grocery store you will see there is not much of a difference.  The advantage is that this bacon will stay on your shelf for 10 years.   Will the post-apocalyptic world currency be made of bacon?

The disadvantage of this bacon is there is the same amount as 3 pounds raw bacon in this can, and once you open it you must refrigerate it.  That is a lot of bacon!  Serving size is 3 strips and there are 18 servings in a can, so if you have bacon with every breakfast and you are feeding a family you will need 2 cans a week.  4 people would consume 1 can about every 4 days.  You will go through it faster if you are also having BLTs or mixing bacon in with green beans or other dishes that require bacon. Zombie Squad, Inc is a criminal enterprise!

by on Apr.10, 2010, under Zombies

I recently discovered that Zombie Squad, Inc is a criminal enterprise.  They commit the same types of felonies that Al Capone & John Gotti did.  I also discovered their coveted trademarks have a defect in the applications that make them invalid.  I cannot challenge them unless and until they first try to enforce the trademarks.  For those that want to scream this is slander, get a dictionary slander is spoken.  For those that want to go to the fallback libel, I can prove everything I have said here, it is not libel if it is true.  I can prove that they solicit funds under fradulent pretenses, that they are wholely illegal in their operation, and that they are breaking state and federal laws on a regular basis.  The question that now remains, will they file a lawsuit and force me to prove this, or will they just acknowledge their actions and eek off into the shadows and “ignore” this.  I have informed Kyle Ladd, one of the “board members”, about my intent to do this, he acknowledged with invalid URLs to the trademarks (I already knew their numbers, how else would I know they were defective?)

Building a bunker

by on Mar.26, 2010, under Zombies

When the zombies attack you may find yourself unable to leave in a safe way.  Roads may be closed or blocked with broken down cars.  Fuel may be all but impossible to get.  Your vehicle may have been wrecked by someone panicing to get out.  You may have shredded your tires driving over zombie corpses.  Whatever the cause, it is always nice to have options.  Options can keep you alive.

Go bags

by on Mar.25, 2010, under Zombies

I have heard many people talk about go bags.  If you do not know these are pre-packed bags with everything you need in case a disaster hits.  Some people put 1-2 changes of clothes, medicines, money, and anything else they think they will need in the immediate aftermath of a terrorist attack, natural disaster or other event.  There is however one item I see lacking in most of these bags which can save your life.
