Learn morse code by telephone – FREE!

by trixter on Sep.12, 2009, under Radio, Telephony

Out of sheer boredom I created a morse code training application in FreeSWITCH.  You call 218-339-8073 and  it will ask you how fast you want the symbols sent (1-50 wpm) and how many symbols in a group.

It will then play morse symbols, selected at random, and then a human equivalent using a TTS generated voice to read the phonetic alphabet equivalent to you.  This way you can verify your decoding accuracy.

Now when you are waiting for the bus/train to take you to work, you can use some of those unlimited mobile phone minutes and learn morse code, or just brush up on it.

I employed the Farnsworth method at 15wpm (the old ARRL testing standard) so if you select a speed lower than 15wpm, the spaces between symbols are lengthened.  This means that you will learn code at 15wpm and not have to relearn what it sounds like when you increase your speed.  Above 15wpm it uses the real speed.

This is ideal for the Koch method to learn.  This is where you hear 1or 2 symbols at a time, once you get proficient with that (usually 97% accuracy) you add an extra symbol and repeat at that level until you have become proficient, and just keep adding symbols until you have mastered morse.

A note about this being a free service.  The telephone number is a continental US number.  You may have to pay for calls to this number, depending on your carrier and the location you place the call from.  Only  your carrier will know for sure.  If you have boost mobile, T-mobile “my fav”, some VoIP providers, and some landline providers this call will be free.  If you have other carriers you may have free calls at night and on weekends that would be free.  Even some international providers like alice.nl allow for free calling to this number.

If you are still paying per minute for long distance, perhaps its time you considered a change in your long distance plan :)
