Bondo is great!

by trixter on May.09, 2009, under Truck stuff

Well working further on the truck I have been patching some minor dents with bondo in the hopes that I can repaint it and have it look somewhat closer to new.  I bought a paint sprayer at kragen (already had a compressor so it was cheap) and some primer along with a tin of bondo.

While working on this I decided that it would be easier, and look better if I removed all the decals from the manufacturer, the stickers applied by the previous owner, and all the chrome trim that ran along the doors.  The trim was not in perfect condition as it was and kinda needed to be replaced.  While it does protect the doors from minor dings, I plan on putting some tubular rocker bars on the side and that will protect the doors better :)

Once I have repainted it I will post a picture of what it looks like which you can compare to the original.

The list of things that I have to do (that I know about):

  • Replace the 8 inch lift with a 4 inch lift
  • Replace the instrument cluster with something that doesnt short
  • Install the fuel tank level sender
  • Clean the inside (thinking of rhino lining the entire inside)
  • Apply tint to the rear windows
  • Install various radios (music, cb, ham)
  • Replace both bumpers with a steel one with a 2 inch receiver
  • Get a spare tire and figure out where I will mount it
  • Fix the steering (waiting to do the lift first)
  • Fix the dome light (bulb is good so its probably just a disconnected wire)

Once I have done all of that I am going to be looking at interior improvements.  The center console that is currently in the vehicle is not the full size one, I want the larger console.  I may replace the seats, they are foam, which is worn.   I plan on installing some inverters and 12v power ports in various places, in addition I plan on installing a dual battery system so that when the engine is off all the inverters and such use the spare battery to prevent draining the main battery.  I am considering installing through the door spot lights (like in police cars).  I am also looking into a heads up display unit, I have some ideas for a really cheap DIY system, but I may go with a premade solution.  I am sure that if I do everything in this list, I will have found new things to do aswell.
